Ocular Allergies

Ocular allergies, also known as allergic conjunctivitis, occur when the eyes react to allergens such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or mold. This condition triggers an immune response that leads to symptoms like redness, itching, watering, and swelling of the eyes. The conjunctiva, the thin membrane covering the white part of the eye and the inside of the eyelids, becomes inflamed during an allergic reaction. Ocular allergies can be seasonal, related to specific times of the year, or perennial, occurring year-round due to constant exposure to allergens. Treatment typically involves avoiding known allergens, using over-the-counter or prescription antihistamine eye drops, and applying cold compresses to reduce swelling and irritation. In more severe cases, a doctor may prescribe corticosteroid eye drops or other medications to control the symptoms. While ocular allergies are usually not harmful to vision, they can significantly impact comfort and quality of life if left untreated.
